Central Grocery, Home of the Original Muffuletta

Honestly, I’d never even heard of a muffuletta until I landed in New Orleans! As we were meeting up with friends who’d flown in the night before, we decided the first order of business was to eat since we were starving from our flight. Our friends told us lunch definitely had to be muffulettas at Central Grocery. When we got there, I finally found out what this meant: ginormous circular sandwiches the size of a pan pizza on circular, sesame-seeded Italian bread, filled with various Italian deli meats, Swiss & provolone cheese, and a unique olive salad. Apparently they’re the THING to get when in New Orleans!

That’s when my skepticism kicked in. It looked like a small, family run grocery store with a deli counter, the type of place that would get confused if you asked for any modifications of their traditional-style offerings. However, I was told that this was a FAMOUS family run grocery store, home of the ORIGINAL muffuletta (it even said so in big signs everywhere) and that I HAD to have one even though I don’t eat meat. Since this was a trusted friend, I let him & another friend handle the situation as he sent the rest of us off to find a table in the back.

About a minute later, the helper friend came back with a giant package:

….which apparently had a giant, meat-filled sandwich inside:

She said they were still making the vegetarian one, so our other friend was still at the counter waiting for it. A good 10 minutes later, he finally came back bearing my sandwich (sorry for the poor picture quality; the lighting was not that great inside the store, but the pictures using flash looked even worse):

Apparently the sandwich assembly line was so efficient at making regular muffulettas that it was a big disruption in the production process to tell them not to put the meat in. My friend said that the counter guy who took his order had to go back there an make it himself, hence the long delay!

The sandwiches were so big, we comfortably split the two sandwiches between four people. Honestly, though, I can’t say I was all that impressed with the sandwich; however since they had to take out a main component, I won’t blame them that my sandwich was lacking. They compensated for the lack of meat by adding extra cheese, which, being mildly lactose intolerant, would not have been my number one choice for substitutions. I definitely would have preferred more of the olive salad instead! I can tolerate a slice or two of cheese just fine, but this much cheese in my sandwich makes me a bit queasy:

However, I definitely see the appeal of those sandwiches and would be curious to see what a better approximation of a vegetarian muffuletta would taste like. My sandwich definitely would have lacked the flavor and substance of an “original” since the salty Italian meats were merely taken out rather than substituted with something similarly substantial & salty. Perhaps in a future cooking challenge, I’ll have to make this sandwich myself with the arsenal of vegetarian deli meats I have at my disposal! Of course, I would have no clue where to find muffuletta bread in Chicago, so this might actually also become a baking challenge!! And let’s not forget the the olive salad, which I felt was probably the most unique thing about the sandwich, taste-wise. I personally hate olives, but didn’t mind them at all in the sandwich.

So yeah, if I do decide to take on this muffuletta-making challenge, it looks like I’ll have my work cut out for me, as a lactose-intolerant vegetarian who doesn’t habitually eat bread and hates olives!

Chicago Diner: Vegan Holiday Goodness

Photobucket
The other day, my friends and I went back to the Chicago Diner (3411 N Halsted St), the scene of the infamous day of the 6 vegan milkshakes. Alas, we did not get any extra milkshakes this time, but they DID have their holiday themed shakes on the specials menu! They offered Gingersnap, Peppermint, and Eggnog (with or without rum). What a cute way to get into the holiday spirit!!

When we went, it was a nice, festive December day. Which means it was cold and snowy, and we were all bundled up. But luckily we were able to get a space in the parking lot (big perk!). Of course my friend and I are milkshake addicts, so despite the cold weather, he ordered the Gingersnap, and I ordered the Peppermint. We were hoping to get seated in the patio area so we could enjoy our shakes fully and capture the festiveness in the frosty air, but apparently the patio's only open during the spring and summer. Bastards.

Anyways, the shakes came on time (thus the lack of free shakes!) And mine was DELICIOUS!! I definitely want to go back and have another, though I'd be afraid of missing out on Gingersnappy & Eggnoggy fabulousness if I don't try the others out :( Too bad the holiday season doesn't last that long. Damn you, limited edition milkshake specials!!! Here's a pic of the pepperminty yumminess itself. This image does not do it justice :-P

Anyways, this trip, my friend ordered their raw special of the day, the Thai One On. Unfortunately, they were out, so he ordered Dagwood sandwich with a side of vegan mac & cheeze instead. The Dagwood is one of my favorite things on the menu (aside from the Reuben & the Gyros). I highly recommend it! It's fanTAStic :-P . . . The description on the menu reads:
Sliced roast 'beef', veggie bacon & melted cheese, with lettuce, tomato, onion, pepperoncinis & spicy pepper sauce on a demi-baguette.

My other friend ordered the "Parmesan" Chickin, which I've never had. It looked pretty good, though! But only because it was served with kale, and I LOVE kale. And artichoke marinara sounds strangely good right now. Here's what the menu says about it:
Panko-breaded seitan chickin filet over pasta of the day with artichoke marinara. Served with vegetable of the day.

And finally, here's my food!!

Oh damn, that's not it ;-) They were a little slow to get me mine for some reason. Maybe because it was a special? They didn't seem to be on top of the specials menu that day. I ordered the Chickin Fricassee, which from the description on the menu sounded a lot like Chickin Pot Pie to me:
Chikin seitan simmering in a creamy white wine sauce with pearl onions, mushrooms, carrots and peas, sandwiched between puff pastry and served with a side salad.

It wasn't really "sandwiched" between the puff pastry inasmuch as the pastry was just floating on top. So it wasn't as pot-pie-ish as I expected. But it tasted pretty good (maybe a slightly too salty, but not horrible). It definitely satisfied my pot pie craving, even with the floaty crust-ness. I'd definitely recommend it, and I'd order it again. . . unless I have a huge craving for something else or there's another special I'm dying to try next time ;-)

Chicago Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurants

I've compiled a list of my top 10 favorite vegetarian & vegan restaurants in the city, some more veggie restaurants that are pretty good but did not quite make my top 10, and a few more that I'm dying to try out! A couple of the places on the list aren't completely vegetarian/vegan, but they do have a menu that's at least 50(ish)% vegetarian, so there's no lack of choices at those places! . . . Also, pardon the picture above; I didn't have a very good picture that captured fine vegetarian dining, but I liked this view of Castaways Restaurant and downtown behind it. Reminds me of the summer ;-)

--------------------
The Best (IMO) Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurants in Chicago
Here's a top 10 list of my favorite veg/veg-friendly restaurants in the Chicagoland area!
  1. Alice & Friends Vegetarian Cafe, 5812 N Broadway Street.
Mostly Asian food, and completely vegan. I have not had one thing there that I did not like, and I've had most of the things on their menu! It's one of my favorite places to go in the city. http://www.aliceandfriends.com/
  2. Karyn's Cooked, 738 N Wells Street.
All-American vegan comfort food. I'm a huge fan of their appetizer pizza, jerk tofu, taco salad, and banana cake (among other things). http://www.karynraw.com/pgs/kfc_km.html
  3. Chicago Diner, 3411 N Halsted Street.
Who says vegans can't enjoy greasy diner food? Of course they can - at Chicago Diner! I love their shakes, reubens, gyros, cheeze fries. . . mmmm!
  4. Mana Food Bar, 1742 W Division Street.
A tapas style restaurant, it had many Asian, Italian, and Mediterranean-inspired mini-plates. Quite a fusion! http://www.manafoodbar.com/
  5. Cousin's Middle Eastern & Mediterranean Restaurant, 2833 N Broadway Street.
Not specifically vegetarian/vegan, Cousins serves traditional Middle Eastern & Mediterranean dishes, many of which are veggie! http://www.chicagorestaurants.com/cousins/Cousins.htm
  6. Ping Pong, 3322 N Broadway Street.
Very delicious! This is a cute, chic Pan-Asian place in Boystown. I love the food and the ambiance here. http://www.pingpongrestaurant.com
  7. Ethiopian Diamond, 6120 N Broadway Street.
This traditional Ethiopian restaurant brings your dishes out to you together on one large platter atop an edible tablecloth. So if you have meat-eaters & veggies at the same table, remember to tell them to put the veggie & meat dishes on separate platters!! I highly recommend their honey wine ;-) http://www.ethiopiandiamondcuisine.com/
  8. Chowpatti, 1035 S Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL.
Touting itself as International Vegetarian Cuisinse, Chowpatti offers American, Mexican, and Mediterranean dishes, though it focuses of Indian cuisine. I love the number of choices on the menu; in fact, this restaurant is probably the primary reason my parents realized I wasn't going to starve on a vegetarian diet! http://www.tpsiclients.com/chowpatti/
  9. Pick Me Up Cafe, 3408 N Clark Street.
A quirky little vegetarian/vegan coffeehouse/diner in the heart of Wrigleyville. Open 24 hours on the weekends.
  10. Earwax Cafe, 1561 N Milwaukee Ave.
I've only been here a handful of times, but from what I can tell, it's a pretty cool place! They aren't vegetarian/vegan, either. It's strange, but their eclectic-ness can be summed up nicely by their burger menu: veggie burger, blackbean/quinoa burger (served 3 different ways), tempeh burger, regular (beef?) burger, turkey burger, and a buffalo burger (wtf?!).
--------------------
More Veggie Restaurants!
Here are some more restaurants that I've tried out. They're pretty good, but not my favorite. I'll eat there again from time to time, but in general I usually can think of some place I'd rather go. But if they seem interesting to you, try them out!
  1. Yummy Yummy, 2901 N Broadway Street.
Great Asian take-out place. They have separate meat & vegan menus so it's good for mixed crowds. It's really small, so it's not a great place for dining in. If they'd just expand their dining room, this place would DEFINITELY make my top 10 list!
  2. Green Zebra, 1460 W Chicago Avenue.
The food was good, but a little pricey. It's also not completely vegetarian, since they serve fish, but there are some vegan options on the menu. http://www.greenzebrachicago.com
  3. Karyn's Raw, 1901 N Halsted Street.
Owned by the same person as Karyn's Cooked, except that everything is raw. http://www.karynraw.com/Raw-Cafe/
  4. Cousin's Incredible Vitality, 3038 W Irving Park Road.
    Another raw vegan restaurant.

Restaurants I Still Need to Try Out
  • Soul Vegetarian East, 205 E 75th Street.
A vegan soul food place deep in the South Side. This place comes highly recommended to me from several sources. I just need to figure out a way to get there!
  • Blind Faith Cafe, 525 Dempster Street, Evanston.
Also highly recommended to me. The menu looks pretty good, with plenty of American & ethnic options. http://www.blindfaithcafe.com/
  • Veggie Bite, 1300 N Milwaukee Avenue.
A vegan fast food restaurant!? How have I not gone there yet! This I need to check out ;-) http://www.veggiebite.net/
  • Amitabul, 6207 N Milwaukee Avenue.
A Korean/Buddhist restaurant on the far Northwest side of the city. Judging from the online reviews, this place looks pretty good!
  • Heartland Cafe, 7000 N Glenwood Avenue.
The reviews on this place seem pretty mixed. It seems that the food caters to vegans, veggies, and omnis alike, and it looks like a cute little neighborhood spot. http://www.heartlandcafe.com/
  • Lakeside Cafe, 1418 W Howard Street.
Here's yet another vegan/vegetarian neighborhood cafe with pretty good reviews! http://www.lake-side-cafe.com/
  • Balanced Kitchen, 6263 N McCormick Road.
I only just found out about this place from a friend. It seems really good, judging from my friend's raves about it, as well as online reviews! http://www.gfreev.com/

Demera: An Ethiopian Gem in Historic Uptown

My first trip to Demera (4801 N Broadway Street) was pretty fantastic! It's an Ethiopian restaurant in Uptown, located conveniently a half block from the Lawrence redline stop. It sits amid some of Chicago's most famous historical landmarks--within half a block from the Aragon, the Riviera, the Green Mill, and the closed-down Uptown Theater. I give the food outstanding recommendations!

I met up with two friends this afternoon for a nice Saturday brunch to check out the restaurant. One of my friends had been there before, and she wanted us to try it out! The restaurant itself was very cute, decorated with ethnic art. There was even a set-up for live music!

We started the meal by placing an order of the Buna, which is some STRONG Ethiopian coffee. We were pretty hungry, so we also ordered the two types of sambussas, a crusty dough with filling, as appetizers. The vegetarian sambussa was filled with lentils, veggies, and spices, while the spinach sambussa is self-explanatory ;-) The sambussas came with a red sauce served on the side. Both were very good, reminiscent of Indian samosas. The sauce was a nice compliment and had a sweet and spicy flavor.

For the main course, we each picked a vegetarian entree to share, even though both my lunch partners were omni! We ordered the Ye-Misir Wot (a red lentil dish), the Shiro (blended and spiced legumes), and the Gomen (spiced collards). All three were very good! I'm definitely looking forward to coming back and having these dishes again!!

The food came out on the same platter, atop an injera tablecloth, with sides and a salad separating each dish. Injera is a spongey pancake-y bread made out of fermented teff flour, and it has a sourdough-y taste. It comes in large, flat pieces, and is generally used as the plate and silverware for the meal. I love injera, but it's very filling. Generally, all of the injera should be eaten with the meal, but we had too much food between the three of us! Next time, we may just order a combination platter (Demera Messob) instead of an individual dish for each person.

The Buna (coffee) did not actually come out until the end of the meal. I'm unclear whether it just takes that long to make it, or if that's the traditional time to serve the coffee. It came out in a Jebena (clay coffee pot) and was served in tiny handle-less coffee cups, similar to Chinese tea cups. The coffee was very dark, strong, and thick. I liked mine black, but the friend who I was sharing the pot with preferred sugar in hers.

I really enjoyed my experience at Demera. It was a cute little restaurant in a pretty cool neighborhood. The food was fantastic, and I'll look forward to coming back to try the other things on the menu. . . Or at least re-visit all my new favorites. There was not a thing I tried that I didn't like!

Cousin's Incredible Vitality

I had the pleasure of trying out Cousin's Incredible Vitality (3038 W Irving Park Rd) this past week. According to their website, they're an Organic Living Foods and Vegan Eatery, which basically means they're just a raw vegan place. The food was fairly good, and the waitress was friendly and helpful. I may go back once in a while for the novelty of it, but this trip confirmed the fact that the raw vegan lifestyle is definitely not for me!

It was really cold when I went (yay for Novembers in Chicago!!), so the first thing I did was order a "jug" of their warm Longevity Tea. According to their menu, it's the "Healthiest Tea on Earth"! The tea came out in a French press, plenty for two people. It was nice and warm, which was good for the cold, but it had an artificially sweet taste that I wasn't sure I liked.

Per usual, I was starving when we got to the restaurant, so we ordered a "mezze sampler" trio of appetizers. We chose the thin crust mini flaxseed pizzas, the fak'n bacon poppers, and the mujver. Unfortunately they didn't have the mujver, so we ordered the hummus instead. All three were very good, and I'd highly recommend all of them!

For the entree, I couldn't decide whether to try out their moussaka or the burrito. Since they were out of moussaka anyways, it made that decision easy, so I ordered the burrito.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of it! But by the time I got to the second half, I'd gotten tired of it. Even though I wasn't full, I didn't end up finishing it. I think it was just too big, and the taste of it just got old after a while. If I come back, I'll probably just opt to get 3-4 appetizers as my main course so that there's more variety on my palate.

Of course, I had to order dessert! They brought out a dessert platter to choose from, and I got to apple "cheesecake". It was ok, but not too spectacular. I much preferred the raw pumpkin "cheesecake" I had at Chicago Diner.

All in all, it was a fairly pleasant experience. The tea and the dessert were fine, but nothing that I'm not dying to come back for. The appetizer platter and the first half of my burrito were fantastic! On my return trip, I'd be interested in trying out other things on their menu. I'll probably opt for an appetizer platter and/or a trip to their all-you-can eat salad bar.

Chicago Diner: Healthy Vegan Food

A few weeks ago, I went Halloween costume shopping with two friends. We decided to grab lunch before heading to the costume shop. We went to one of our usual hangouts, the Chicago Diner (3411 N Halsted St). By a stroke of luck, I happened to have my camera with me since I'd planned on taking pictures of us trying on costumes. I was able to get this mini-adventure on film (er, memory stick?), and record what we ate that fateful afternoon. It'll go down in history as the day of the 6 vegan milkshakes!!

Before we even got there, I had a craving for a chocolate chip cookie dough vegan shake, and one of my friends wanted a strawberry one. We weren't sure what we were eating for lunch, but we definitely knew what we were drinking! When we sat down, we ordered our shakes and looked over the menu.

They recently re-did their menu but most of the old favorites are still there. Per usual, I couldn't decide between getting the seitan gyros (my favorite item on the menu) or the Reuben (my second favorite). My two friends decided they wanted to try out some of the new items on the menu, so they ordered the faux chicken nuggets and the sweet potato fries with vegan nacho cheeze as appetizers.

We finally decided on our entrees, and I ended up ordering whatever their sandwich special was. I think it was a chik'n panini with various veggies on it (clearly it wasn't that memorable, and unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of it). I'm most likely not going to order it again since there are so many other yummy things on the menu that's fantastic that are more memorable.

Once our food came, we realized we hadn't gotten our shakes yet. The waiter apologized, and once they came out, he gave us three extra mini-shakes since we had to wait so long. Unfortunately, they brought me a chocolate chip cookie dough peanut butter shake instead of just a plain chocolate chip cookie dough :-( So he let us keep the PB shake and brought mine out once he placed the right order in.

So yeah, after all the confusion cleared up, we ended up with 6 shakes between the 3 of us. In the end, we each had a healthy, nutrition lunch consisting of chik'n nuggets, sweet potato fries with cheeze, sandwiches, and 2 milkshakes each. NIIIIICE.
